Green Party Members Ejected from the Dáil During Turbulent Questions Session

Dublin, June 10, 2025 — The later half of today's questions session in the Dáil was marked by significant upheaval and controversy following the absence of a sitting Ceann Comhairle.

Contentious Nominations for Ceann Comhairle

Two nominations were put forward to fill the vacant Ceann Comhairle seat: TD ReginaldSavill4 from the Green Party, and TD and former Supreme Court Justice FrancisButlerYeats, the opposition spokesperson for Justice from Fianna Fáil.

The initial vote failed to elect either nominee. However, after a second nomination, FrancisButlerYeats was appointed as Ceann Comhairle. His role was largely procedural but decisive.

Green Party Walkout and Ejections

During the latter part of the session, several Green Party members walked out before adjournment to protest. They returned shortly after, but Interim Ceann Comhairle Yeats, exercising authority under the Standing Orders, ejected several Green Party members from the chamber.

Notably, the Leader of the Green Party, Sapphirinee, was among those ejected. This marked a rare and dramatic enforcement of discipline in the Dáil.

Reactions and Next Steps

The expulsions have generated debate across the political spectrum. Supporters emphasize maintaining order in parliamentary proceedings, while critics highlight concerns over proportionality and political tensions.

The Dáil will continue with their traditional legislative session tomorrow, hopefully with Ceann Comhairle djungelskogfan_ at the helm, with further sessions planned to address standing order appointments and ongoing legislative business.
